January 13, 2016 Best of Houzz Press Release:
Existing residence built in the 1980s with vertical siding. My client (who had recently relocated with his family from Texas) sought to refresh the exterior look and to make the interior spaces usable for a growing young family with 2 children and a 3rd one coming along. My task was to help my client come up with the best solution that would satisfy their growing needs and desires with a very restricted budget. My client had initially come to me thinking that he needed a full kitchen addition. Upon going through the existing layout, it donned that it was possible to re-lay out the existing interior spaces to make it much more efficient and usable - which was what we did.
<< This is the existing home.
<< and this if what we envision for the new exterior..most of the changes will take place within the interior except for some new windows and a welcoming, new entry timber framed porch that is designed to evoke a contemporary industrial style structure with simple but well executed details, perhaps reminiscent of my client's native home...

It started out as an existing 13 foot by 13 foot deck.
I had a call one day in 2013 mid summer to convert the client's existing deck into a 3 season porch. it then evolved into an all season room. The project was completed in a few months. My clients were very happy with the results.
Come late summer of this year, I had a phone call from the same client. I am told that they have been enjoying their 4 seasons room immensely through winter-spring and summer and that there was where they practically lived. It was the ultimate reward to hear that.
My client then told me that they would like me to help them design their eventual retirement home somewhere in the New England hills based on the "pod" that I had help them re-create.
It is with this "pod" concept that this new home will be based on. It will be a series of low-lying "pods" that will be built into the natural rolling contours of the land, that will capture unique views the site has to offer, that will engage the land and create a discourse between the inside and outside.
On a functional level, it will not be a large house at all. It will serve as a sanctuary for my clients who love the outdoors but will also consider elements of desigh that will not only be energy efficient, easy to maintain, but also will facilitate convenience, ease of use and be able to withstand the tough New England seasons.
