House by the Meadow

ROLLING MEADOW, BUBBLING BROOK…

WKPM Site Photo - preconstruction

The natural idyllic setting provides an ideal backdrop for live, work and play for a family with 3 teenage children.

As one approaches, the "backyard" is by the front, planning of the interior spaces and window placements were carefully considered to enable privacy from within, at the same time be able to look out and appreciate its expansive natural views.

The layout is intended for a relaxed family oriented lifestyle with occasional entertaining needs for extended family and friends with an open-feel kitchen, high ceilinged family room overlooking the western meadows. Recognizing that there are moments for play and interaction, and at other times, opportunities for reflective and quiet moments. Therefore, the layout carves out living spaces that promote family interaction while affording sanctuaries for those needed quiet moments..

The approach is marked by 3 distinctive forms comprising:

a 2 story classic colonial form housing the main living areas in the centre flanked by 2 other gable forms (the garage/workshop on the left-rear and master bedroom suite on the right) placed perpendicular to one other. Larger proportioned window openings enable plenty of daylight ito the interior spaces, while giving the otherwise classic forms a contemporary look.

Other notable design features include a loft hideaway space to the smallest bedroom carved out of excess attic space. One needs to visit the house to fully appreciate the multitude of delights and surprise spaces..

Mortise and tenon timber framed structure is expressed in the interior living spaces.

The overall planning makes use of passive solar design principles while balancing that with views offered of the site. The house envelope is detailed such that it will maximize heat gain in winter and mitigate in summer months, and with an aim towards practical and cost effective to build while achieving beyond code minimum energy standards.

This project is a a result of careful consideration in combining practicality versus energy efficiency and affordability, while still affording spaces that allow one to appreciate its natural surroundings and feel uplifted.
